Trembling, Shivering in Hopelessness
We don’t need this. Please. We don’t need racism to win our War Against Terrorism.
Our children don’t need this. Don’t. Dont go down that path. Noboby wins.
From Sydney Morning Herald ~ A Letter to the Editor
“Beware whose face you slap, it may be yours
What is happening to our society?
I was on the train when the peace was suddenly shattered. From the other end of the carriage a booming male voice was verbally abusing someone at length, apparently blaming him, or her, for the bombing in Bali.
Then there was total silence. When I went to get off the train, there, in the end compartment, was a young woman, trembling, and being studiously ignored by the other passengers. She was wearing a headscarf.
How much of this is going on today, I wondered.
On the platform, she wept as she told me that she is a born and bred Australian, university-educated and a mother. She just wants to lead a peaceful existence and has never been overseas. So, are we now to blame our innocents for the atrocities overseas, selecting them merely by the religious symbols that they wear?
Shall we berate those wearing crucifixes for assassinations in Northern Ireland? Spit on little boys with yarmulkes for events in Palestine?
And while we are at it, why not blame the Protestant Church for the next atrocity of the Ku Klux Klan?
Or don’t they mean anything if Australians are not among the victims?
Feelings of grief and rage are understandable, but let’s use them to bind the community together, not to tear it apart.
M. Ferrie, Oatley, October 16.”
