O Bertie
O Bertie Bertie Bertie of course you owe your people a few words about Ray Burke. Of course, you are not bound, legally, to answer anything. For if you did, it would have been game over for you ? spare us the obvious please.
It was a narrow escape.
You appointed Ray Burke in June 1997 as Minister of Foreign Affairs. You did, as any prudent Prime Minister or Taoiseach would have done, ask Dermot Ahern, in the midst of allegations, to carry out an investigation before confirming your appointment of Ray Burke. (I sure admire your stubbornness (or persistence). You were so confident that you would handle this political time bomb with relative ease.) Now despite some initial conflicts in Dermot Ahern?s statements to the Flood Tribunal. The final version got you off the hook - ?Mr Dermot Ahern only formally sent a copy of his report on Mr Burke "as a matter of courtesy" to the Taoiseach in May 1998, almost a year after his investigation. He included memos of his conversations with Mr Murphy jnr.?
Grand. Dermot Ahern was ordered to do a job and he didn't report that important conversation to you until ONE year later. It was getting a bit boring don't you feel? It's so unimaginative!
You're fine. You didn't see anything that might indicate Ray Burke was a very very corrupted fellow. We couldn't blame you. Its ALL Dermont Ahern who didn't do what he had been asked to do. He didn?t do it properly. And you didn't even have to sacrifice a pawn. Dermot Ahern was our Minister of Social Community and Social Affairs and is now our Minister of Communication, Marine and Natural Resource. A promotion? Not sure. More opportunities to mix with large corporations like Enron? That's for sure.
Irish people are really really nice people. Forgivingness is a virtue.
There is no allegation. But what has to be remembered is that at the time Ray Burke was appointed, there were already questions about his conducts. When you decided Burke's appointmnet despite all those allegations which later (not years but only a few months) turned out to be the truth, do you as leader of our Government not feel obliged to give us a few words about this self-made fiasco. Sorry is not enough given the scale of the corruption revealed. If you were truely sorry, why would you promote the fellow who had failed so miserably in doing a job you had assigned. Let's get real?!
I don't suppose there is any thing new about corrupted politicians. What surprise me is how well this Government has managed to downplay each and every tribunal findings (despite the fact that we probably have more tribunals here than in any other countries in the world).

Think of a few words Bertie! You had so much to say when Burke resigned and you did it with passion "In the case of Deputy Ray Burke, I see a much more sinister development. The persistent hounding of an honourable man who resigned his important position on the basis of innuendo and unproven allegations".
